Despite the excellent pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of fluoroquinolones, their use in the pediatric population has been limited by studies demonstrating irreversible damage to cartilage in the weight-bearing joints of juvenile animals. However, quinolones have been used in children with cystic fibrosis for severe, multidrug-resistant pseudomonal infections, and have proved safe and effective with no documented radiologic or histologic arthropathogenic effects, Based on these reports, further studies have been instituted in children without cystic fibrosis with similar encouraging results. Fluoroquinolones may have a role in prophylactic therapy following acute urinary tract infection in children.
