摘要
"Shang" and "xia" both have the meaning of "go to" but differ in usage. The difference is because part of the meaning of their corresponding nouns of locality maps through metaphor to the directional verbs, though to different spaces. Through observing the semantic structures of both "shang"+object and "xia"+object, some systematic and organized information about these spaces can be obtained and employed in Chinese teaching as a second language.
