An empirical study has revealed types of Not-I as a substructure of self-awareness, which consists in a generalized image of Another, and is opposed to the I-image. Those types are: strong vs weak, antipathetic vs just alien. They are linked to self-attitude, inner dialogue, defense tendencies and personality features. The findings support a conception of Not-I as a structure which is linked to the self both in content and function. The study has also revealed generalized characteristics of Not-I which allow differentiation between a contradictory and a normal self-awareness. The characteristics include emotional attitude to the character in the drawing, simple or contradictory nature of the portrait in contrast to the instruction. The aspects of Not-I discovered by the study as being linked to self-awareness and personality characteristics, can serve as an interpretational basis for a technique of studying self-awareness.
