SANS studies of solubilization by micelles

Block copolymer micelles can dramatically enhance solubility of some compounds in aqueous media. This phenomenon was investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Solubilization in aqueous micellar solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) diblock copolymers at various degrees of neutralization with Na counterions was studied, Structural characteristics of the micelles and parameters characterizing the solubilization process were determined from the scattering data. Kinetics of the solubilization of hydrophobic compounds by micellar cores as seen by time-resolved SANS is also described.
