We develop a generalized version of the parallel tempering algorithm, based upon the nonextensive thermostatistics of Tsallis and coworkers. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on a simple one-dimensional problem and on a Lennard-Jones cluster. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
