Follicular lesion in a thyroglossal duct cyst with intralaryngeal extension

Follicular lesion in a thyroglossal duct cyst with intralaryngeal extension is very rare. We present a case with this rare disease. 54-year-old female was seen with an unrelated symptom on Oct-16, 2001. A large submucosal mass in the left wall of the larynx just superior to the vocal cord was found. CT and MRI revealed a mass of 4 cm-in-diameter located between the tongue base and the larynx. She undertook exploratory laryngotomy, where the mass was located in the submucosal space beneath the thyrohyoid membrane between the hyoid bone and the left vocal cord. With incising the thyrohyoid membrane, the mass which had fibrous connection with the inferior border of the hyoid bone was delivered from the larynx. The mass was excised in conjunction with the central portion of the hyoid bone. Pathological diagnosis was follicular lesion of the thyroid. It was supposed follicular adenoma of the thyroid arising from the remnant thyroid tissue in the thyroglossal duct cyst.
