Objective: We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the homeopathic agent caulophyllum D4 in patients with premature rupture of the membranes(PROM) at term. Methods: 40 patients with FROM between 38 and 42 weeks' gestation and cervical dilation less than or equal to 3 cm were enrolled. None of the patients had regular uterine contractions. Patients received 1 tablet per hour of caulophyllum or placebo for 7 hours. The main outcome criterion was the time between application of the first tablet and the beginning of regular uterine contractions. We also noted the duration of labor, oxytocin requirements, mode of delivery, Bishop scores, and the rate of maternal and neonatal infections. Data were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney-U and Fisher's exact tests. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in any of the outcome variables. Conclusions: Caulophyllum D4 was safe but not clinically effective for inducing labor after FROM at term.
