The notion of regret in the clinical approach to gender reassignment

Objectives. - This article aims to discuss the notion of "regret" in the clinical management of gender reassignment. Method. - This paper proposes an inventory of the existing literature as well as numerous translations. Results. - The results show that the notion of regret appears as a central argument in "transgender" trajectories, particularly in relation to the "precautionary principle". Discussion. - On the basis of these results, this article proposes a redefinition of regret, as resulting from disappointments relating to surgery techniques and inadequate hospital follow-up, rather than to the transition processes themselves. Conclusion. - Ultimately, it is the suspicion towards transgender bodies and towards transition per se that is debated here. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.
