Bandpass-limited subsampling and six port direct conversion techniques are compared to analyze their suitability in the millimeter wave range signals. Development of low-jitter reference oscillators for software-defined receivers up to several gigahertz and a subsequent up-conversion into millimeter-wave frequencies is also discussed. Direct digital bandpass-limited subsampling of millimeter wave signals is becoming feasible with the continuously increasing speed of highly integrable semiconductor technologies. The main advantage of the six port direct conversion technology is its simple construction requiring only the reference oscillator as an active RF component.
