摘要
New material developments including alloys of aluminium and magnesium, fibre reinforced composites and high strength steels form a solid basis for a significant weight reduction of the car body. However, pure material substitution is seldom successful. Cost - efficient lightweight design requires a holistic approach covering the whole system design - material - production technology. The application - specific material and product selection as well as the determination of the appropriate fabrication concept are most demanding tasks for the designer. In addition, strong emphasis must be given to production planning and process optimization, mainly regarding assembly and surface finishing. Multi - product and multi - material design ask for the development and optimization of new innovative joining techniques for the reliable assembly of the various components.
