Does telecommuting really increase productivity?

The importance of increasing productivity throughout the US and world economies as a major driving force for IT investments is discussed. The business press abounds with anecdotal accounts of increased productivity resulting from telecommuting. Many organizations offer telecommuting as an option, but are not strongly encouraging it. It is concluded that telecommuters must put in more time planning to make sure all the necessary resources are available when away from work.
