An important research theme in sleep medicine that needs to be tackled by dentists is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. As an increased demand for the involvement of dentists in sleep medicine has been anticipated from the society, the Japanese Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine is not only working to enhance sleep research in the field of dentistry but has also established sleep training for dentists and a certification programme for sleep dentists. This paper presents the range covered by sleep dentistry in relation to dentists in Japan and the current educational situation.
