Dispersion of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Marine Polysaccharides for Bone Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is an emerging interdisciplinary field of research and gained much attention in the recent years to produce artificial organs. In the present study, chitosan-alginate (Chi-Alg) and chitosan-alginate with single walled carbon nanotubes (Chi-Alg-SWNT) scaffolds were fabricated by freeze-drying method and physicochemically characterized as bone graft substitutes. The water uptake and retention ability of composite scaffolds (Chi-Alg and Chi-Alg-SWNT) showed similar efficiency. The porosity and pore size of Chi-Alg-SWNT scaffold was found to be greater than 90% and 58-459 mu m, respectively. Cell viability, alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralization of the scaffolds were checked in vitro using MG63 cell line and the results revealed that Chi-Alg-SWNT scaffold system has better activity compared to Chi-Alg system. The observations suggest that Chi-Alg-SWNT composite scaffold is one of the promising biomaterials for bone tissue engineering.
