A practical laser ignition system for the ground test of solid rocket motor is developed successfully. This system adopts solid Nd:YAG laser as a power source and optical fiber cables as energy conveyors to initiate the laser initiated detonators (LIDs) first, the through bulkhead initiators (TBIs) are detonated second, and finally the igniter of solid rocket motor is ignited. Two kinds of LIDs and TBIs design are regarded as the most suitable choice for the ignition according to a lot of tests. The system provides outstanding safety by utilizing a mechanical laser shuttle for positive laser interruption and high reliability by using redundant optical fiber cables. The design, description, performance, development status and the main problems to be done in the future are reported.
