Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Significant advances in arthroscopic techniques have led to widespread performance of arthroscopically assisted anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This is a highly demanding procedure, which carries the risk of significant knee disability if the graft is placed improperly. Proper patient selection, surgical technique, and postoperative rehabilitation remain the keys to successful ACL reconstruction. This article presents the author's surgical approach to acute and chronic ACL reconstruction. The surgical techniques and rationale for autograft hamstring augmentation and autograft patellar tendon ACL reconstruction are outlined.
