摘要
Although it was Piteas who at the end of the 4th century BC provided the first reports on Britain, for most of the intellectuals of the High Roman Empire it was an irrefutable question that it had not been the Greek explorer, but Gaius Julius Caesar, the first to have reached the island. Caesar came to Britain twice, in 55 BC. and in 54 BC. Bearing in mind the ongoing campaigns against the Gallic tribes, in this article we try to answer the following questions: Why focus attention on a place that, a priori, did not represent any imminent danger? What did he hope to achieve with these actions? What consequences would the arrival of the proconsul on the island have for Britain and Rome?
