Non classical eutectoid decomposition products morphologies in Fe-Cr-C and Fe-Cr-Mo-C steels

摘要
The morphology of eutectoid microconstituents originated from the austenite isothermal decomposition above the TTT curve's bay of both a high purity Fe-5.2%Cr-0.46%C alloy and a commercial Fe-C-Mo tool steel are described. Microstructural chances were observed with the gradual lowering of the transformation temperature in both alloys: formation of classical lamellar pearlite at intermediate temperatures pearlite at high temperatures, ragged "arborescent" morpholologies at intermeduate temperatures and acicular ferrite plus carbide aggregates at low temperatures near the bay. The carbides were characterized using optical and electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction of extracted carbides: the result was compared with thermodynamic calculations. In both steels the precipitation of M7C3 alloy carbides was associated with the unusual morphologies.
