Procedures are described for the extraction of carrier free iodine from 100 ml seawater samples, and the measurement of the I-129/I-127 ratio of this iodine by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the Gif-sur-Yvette AMS facility. The extraction procedure is simple, rapid and relatively inexpensive, with significantly reduced cross-contamination in the ion source and less current dependence of the AMS measurements compared to samples prepared using carrier. These features make very attractive the use of nuclear reprocessing derived 1211 1 as a tracer in the climatically sensitive regions of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
