A new low temperature comparator was developed for the purpose of calibrating industrial thermometers in the range -190 degrees C to -25 degrees C. The system is based on passive liquid nitrogen cooling and two independent control loops: one loop to control the temperature of a shield in between the comparator block and the vacuum chamber and liquid nitrogen, another loop to control the temperature of the comparator block itself. The test performed on both industrial thermometers and standard platinum resistance thermometers showed that calibration uncertainties of better than 5 mK can be achieved over the whole range.
