Proteins coming into contact with the skin are associated with two types of dermatosis: contact urticaria (CU) and protein contact dermatitis (PCD). This article reviews the pathophysiology and the clinical picture of PCD, and the proteins, e.g., those from fruits and vegetables, spices, plants and wood, animals, grains and enzymes, which are responsible for this condition, most of which is occupation-related.
