The paper presents preconditions of present social institutions in Ukraine in connection with the necessity to implement the idea of sustainable development. Similarity of basic religious norms with terms of sustainable development concept has been indicated. The role of religion as a social institution in spreading and implementation of the global idea of sustainable development in Ukraine has been substantiated.
