This paper reports on the design of novel liquid media immunosensors based on shear horizontally polarised surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) devices for the continuous and direct detection of biological interactions. A portable SH-SAW sensor array system has been developed where SH-SAW devices are fabricated on lithium tantalate piezoelectric substrates. The interaction between bovine immunoglobulin G (Igc) and Protein A was investigated to establish the feasibility of the proposed sensing system. Analysis of the kinetic phases of the interaction are evaluated in real time and preliminary results clearly show that a fast, highly sensitive and reproducible response is obtainable for various IgG concentrations in the range of 1E-7 to 1E-1 mg/ml.
