摘要：
Universally speaking, all natural languages contain elements of both ambiguity and humor. The present essay attempts, in terms of phonology, lexicology and syntax, to analyze the language phenomena which cause ambiguity, hence humor. Through the careful analysis and study of the phenomenon of ambiguity in English humor, we hold that ambiguity can serve as a complement to its defect in communication and is thus a primary source for creating English humor. The proper application of ambiguity can often lead to humorous and witty effects, adding luster and vitality to the English language.
