摘要
Motor oil has the tendency to form low-temperature deposits, or sludge, which may be formed in the engine when the automobile operates with conditions of frequent changes in speed and in temperature differences, with such sludge representing a dispersion of aggregated tarry particles of complicated composition. There are methods in various forms that attempt to simulate sludge formation in a working engine. The method includes some stages in order to more fully reproduce the factors under laboratory conditions that influence sludge formation in a working engine, and to produce a closer approximation to an actual sludge for the dispersed phase formed in the laboratory equipment. These stages include catalytic oxidation of the oil in the presence of a solution of sulfuric acid and air in a laboratory equipment forming part of nonstandard laboratory methods, mixing the oxidized oil with water, and separating the sludge, drying it, and determining the amount. The method was applied to estimate the sludge formation tendencies for motor oils of various kinds.
