PNECOS: A Peer-to-Peer Network Coding Streaming System

摘要
Multimedia streaming services, such as IPTV and VoD, are current killer applications on Internet. In recent years, peer-to-peer (P2P) networking has been untilized to exploit well resources of end hosts to extend the service scalability of large scale multimedia streaming services. This paper proposes a Peer-to-peer NEtwork COding based Streaming system (PNECOS) to provide an overlay multimedia streaming service. PNECOS employs the network coding technology to supply stateless and independent encoded content, efficiently utilize the buffer space for peer nodes, and balance network traffic load and server load. Simulation results show that with network coding, the effective buffer length of peer nodes can be extended by increasing storage spaces for coded content, leading to substantial reduction of server bandwidth consumption.
