We have designed and constructed a laser 1-D barcode reader by using an infrared sensor as an automatic sensing switch and Arduino board as a program controller. Experimental results have been showed that laser 1-D barcode scanner read the samples' information from the optimum barcode area of 1.2 x 0.4 cm(2) at a focal length of 5.0 cm, whereas scanning time was 400 ms with a proper resolution. Impact of this work concerns the two points. First, our laser 1-D barcode scanner is a portable, compact and home-made device. Second, we have built a simpler, lower-cost laser scanner, as compared with the commercial one. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
