The article reflects on the chronicles and notes published in local periodicals such as O 5 de Abril and Gazeta de Novo Hamburgo. It analyzes the construction of the social imagery around the issue of abolition in the city of Novo Hamburgo. This paper is part of the studies connected to the research project entitled Memories, Identities and Ethnic Relations in Novo Hamburgo, carried out at the Centro Universitario Feevale.
