The inspiration and the facts: library and information services in the United Kingdom

The paper examines, on a cross-sector, thematic basis, topics that are common to all parts of Britain's library and information world. These include the impact of constitutional change and new government policies, particularly those associated with social inclusion and lifelong learning. The modern emphasis on digitization, and the re-emphasis on reading, are also considered alongside the challenges facing the LIS workforce,and the increasing importance placed on assessment, accountability and best value. Marketing strategies, new library buildings, education and research are also discussed. The paper concludes that, despite some tensions, unresolved issues, and a few disappointments, the past few years have seen a renaissance in British librarianship, and that the profession is well placed to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the future.
