The Emerging Field of Semantic Scientific Knowledge Integration Introduction

Several geosciences researchers continued taking advantage of the emergence of virtual repositories and observatories to develop the emerging field of semantic scientific knowledge integration. The repositories and observatories Integration Workshop, held in March 2008 as part of the AAAI's Spring Symposium Series, focused on this emerging field. The goal of the workshop to help identify and encourage semantic scientific knowledge integration professionals into collaborative efforts. The workshop and the emerging professionals provided a forum for collecting and sharing e-Science experiences with representation languages modeling techniques, and tools, reasoning techniques and tools, and reusable resources. Emerging themes covered a wide range of topics and included foundational aspects of science knowledge representation and integration, and evaluation of science ontologies for use in knowledge integration.
