A Smart Duty Cycle Adaptation Algorithm for the Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks

摘要
In making the universities smart it is needed to efficiently manage the duty cycle operation of nodes. Currently, IEEE 802.15.4 recommends static use of duty cycle operation which is not suitable in university environment because the contents are always not the same for all applications. Thus, an algorithm is needed for the dynamic adjustment of nodes duty cycle with multiple objectives to enhance the network lifetime, throughput and to lower the latency and energy depletion. This paper proposes an algorithm for the smart university environment called Smart Duty Cycle Adaptation (SDCA) algorithm to adapt the duty cycle of nodes simultaneously. During simulation, SDCA algorithm is capable of adapting dynamic duty cycle at run time based on network load, received ratio and network delay. Furthermore, simulation results show enhanced network lifetime, network throughput and less end-toend delay when compared with IEEE 802.15.4.
