Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a motility disorder of the foregut and has a multifactorial etiology. The primary event is the destruction of the antireflux barrier caused by the development of the hiatal hernia, Impairment of gastric motility and esophageal peristalsis may consequently worsen the disease and are responsible for the occurrence of complications.
