Microstructure and mechanical behavior of 6061Al reinforced with silicon nitride particles, processed by powder metallurgy

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) of 6061Al matrix reinforced with Si3N4 can be produced by hot extrusion of cold uniaxial pressed compacts with rare and small porosity. Mechanical properties of `as extruded' and T6 treated 6061 Al alloy matrix rods are similar to the average forged alloy ones, in spite of the low Mg content of the alloy matrix and the preferential precipitation on grain boundaries due to the fragmentation of the oxide layer. The mechanical properties of the MMCs obtained by this process have a strong limitation for high particle fractions, due mainly to the higher number of nucleation sites present for the cracks to form as a result of particle clusters.
