Post-Chernobyl chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes of the residents in the contaminated areas of Belarus and of liquidators-have been reviewed. The role of cytogenetic investigations in individual and group dosimetry, as well as their significance in the evaluation of the exposed individuals' health status are under discussion. Despite the fact that some uncertainties are masking the value of the findings, it is important to show that the presence of aberrant lymphocytes following years of the accident may reveal high risk groups in the present-day modified environment, bearing in mind that Various factors may contribute to cytogenetic instability.
