We prove that on any complex projective smooth fourfold F with Neron-Severi group NS(F) similar or equal to Z, there are only finitely many components of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth surfaces not of general type. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
