The reduction of noise arising from the radiator cooling fan in automotive applications

Reduction of the fan noise in automotive off-highway machines is often required in order to meet European noise legislation. By matching the fan with the system in which it operates, noise can be sometimes reduced by three decibels or more. improvements can be made to many installations by means which are often contrary to intuition based on the wisdom for ducted industrial fans. A novel idea incorporating two fans in series rotating in the same direction has been tested. Comparison with a single fan indicates increased pressure capability and hence increased flow rate with reduced noise.
