Collective Intelligence and Knowledge Management: Who is the Middle and Who is the End?

The article addresses, through a systematic literature review, the relationship between knowledge management and collective intelligence, as perceived by authors in the IS area. It started with a first screening of 1032 scientific articles, until it arrived, after the application of several filtering criteria, to 15 studies that dealt with the two constructs, which were deeply analyzed. It was possible to identify pertinent characteristics of each theme and the interrelationships existing between them. Three predominant approaches were identified. The most common approach is the one that considers collective intelligence as a tool to improve knowledge management. Other authors present knowledge management as a means to leverage collective intelligence. And, finally, there are those who presented scenarios of coexistence and inter-relationship between the two constructs, with collective intelligence and knowledge management occurring independently, but supporting each other.
