Complications of hand and wrist surgery in the athlete

Among athletes, hand and upper extremity injuries are the most common. Frequently, the most debilitating complications of these injuries can result from delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Complications of the injuries themselves and attempted, corrective surgical procedures may result in significant functional compromise. The treating physician must be able to educate the athlete about the risks and complications inherent to the injury and its treatment options.
