Coherent precipitation in Ni-rich Ni-Ti single crystals

The complex decomposition sequence in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys involves the formation of two distinguishable Ll(2)-related coherent metastable states before the stable eta phase (D0(24)) appears at sufficiently high temperatures. Related small-angle neutron scattering studies are reviewed and complemented by recent results of in-situ aging of polycrystals and single crystals at temperatures between 900 and 1240 K. The two-stage behavior of coherent decomposition is confirmed, and the formation of Ll(2)-type precipitates preceding the growth of D0(24)-type lamellae is observed even at 1240 K - above the currently suggested coherent miscibility gap.
