Heparin free hemodialysis using heparin coated hemophan

The effective dose of heparin that, when used to prerinse Hemophan dialyzers, is capable of preventing dialyzer clotting when hemodialysis is performed without systemic heparinization is determined. Successful hemodialysis was performed with all three doses of heparin prerinse in the majority of subjects. The functional performance of Hemophan dialyzers with different doses of heparin prerinse is illustrated. The aPPTs were measured predialysis and post dialysis to evaluate whether heparin release of a substantial degree occurred during treatment. Results revealed that Hemodialysis without systematic anticoagulation can be done successfully with heparin coated Hemophan with a user friendly method. Although modest doses are adequate, optimal performance may require 20,000 U. Heparin coated Hemophan reduces the logistic burden of saline flushing.
