In May 2000, the World Wide Web Consortium issued the specification for version 1.1 of the Simple Object Access Protocol. The name SOAP stuck; in version 1.2, the W3C ceased to consider SOAP to be an acronym. SOAP is just SOAP, a way applications can use XML to exchange structured and typed information. SOAP-based services are the foundation of the current push toward service-oriented Web architecture. Unfortunately, getting from the foundation to the complete edifice still involves a lot of work. A simple but complete example shows how SOAP works. This column includes a comparison of developer toolkits as well. © 2006 IEEE.
