Using a discourse analytic research approach, users' interpretations Of the social and cultural role of music libraries are examined. Three interpretative repertoires were identified from interviewed users' talk: the general education repertoire, the alternative repertoire and the demand repertoire. Diversity, quality and equality are central concepts in all library talk, but their meaning is contextually and ideologically defined. It is concluded that the library is as multifaceted an institution for users as it is for librarians, which poses a problem for the planning of user-centered library services.
