Effects of Impurity Ions upon Cs Recycling in a Negative Hydrogen Ion Source

Behavior of impurities produced in a negative hydrogen ion source by back-streaming positive ions was studied using a collision cascade simulation code, ACAT (Atomic Collision in Amorphous Target). The mass of atoms and the surface binding energies cause the chromium emission from 316 stainless-steel larger than the atomic fraction of 316 stainless-steel for a proton energy below 500 eV. The produced impurities after being ionized in the source plasma strike the surface of the plasma grid to remove cesium (Cs) on the surface. Large mass impurity ions like molybdenum and copper used as the ion source wall material enhance removal of Cs on the surface. Coating the surface of ion source component with refractory metals will reduce the Cs consumption rate.
