摘要：

This article looks at the roots and historical development of the institutions preceding the formation, in 1983 on the heels of the 1978 Health Reform Act, of ISPESL, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and prevention. At the end of the 19th century, at a time of great social and cultural ferment arising from the problems of the workers, API (the national accidents prevention association) was founded in Italy, separately from but parallel to the first associations for steam boiler users. These were the seed which gave fruit to public bodies dealing with prevention in the workplace. From these beginnings various institutions followed, dealing with health and safety at work, against the changing backdrop of Italy in this century. ISPESL has recently set itself the task of organizing and assessing the documents in its archives, which serve as an important source for research into occupational prevention in Italy.
