Lowering the Output Resistance by Quadrature Phasing in Switched-Capacitor Power Converters

A model for quadrature phasing in switched-capacitor power converters based on cascaded voltage doublers is proposed in this paper. The quadrature phases reduce the peak currents during power conversion by doubling the charge transfer events for a given frequency of operation. The overall effect is a reduction in the converter output resistance between 25% and 50% that also improves the conversion efficiency. The model was derived from first principles to highlight the improvement in output resistance for an arbitrary number of stages. Simulations for converters with two, three, four and five stages were run to validate it.
