Professional development of engineer educators: from the lecture to the program

The appeal from the UICEE to launch a professional development program for engineering educators encouraged the author to review his recent papers and prepare the background far a curriculum that would eventually enhance the quality of education as we enter the new century. These previous papers, covering various topics concerning class work, course design, curriculum development and career counselling touch on basic practical aspects of engineering education, and have been based on practical experience. At the university where the author is currently affiliated, a recent development provided the basis for the advancement of same of the new ideas in engineering education, and was in cooperation with three research assistants who have been assigned to work with the author. Although many universities, including Stanford University, have been implementing professional development programs for many years, we feel that the suggestions made in this paper can also contribute to the training of young staff who will eventually be the education leaders in the coming years.
