摘要
The symbolic meaning of the death of Gerald in Women in Love by D. H. Lawrence has attracted much attention in academic circles. The traditional interpretations, which focus on the perspectives of gender relations and of critique of industrial society, position Gerald as the victims of the modem civilization, but have overlooked Gerald himself as a man. The novel foreshadows the death of Gerald from the aspects of religious belief and personal emotion, makes great efforts to strengthen the speculative tension of death and life, and reveals that the process of Gerald's death is the process of disintegration of Gerald's mechanical properties.
