Diagnostic tests are an essential part of clinical. medicine, assisting the clinician in formulating diagnoses and judging disease severity, prognosis and likely responses to therapy. Correct use of a test's diagnostic information requires its performance characteristic to be determined through rigorous evaluation in clinical settings. Traditionally, sensitivity, specificity and predictive values have been widely instituted in the medical literature to characterise test performance. However, in more and more publications, likelihood ratios replace these indices. The aim of this paper is to present the concept of likelihood ratios and to illustrate their application through cases studies. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
