Motion Activated Security Camera Using Raspberry Pi: An IoT Solution for Room Security

摘要
The Internet of Things (IoT) ideology brought new opportunities for developing a much wider range of smart services and applications using a small, cheap and flexible computer hardware that allow interaction between identifiable smart objects and end-users. Considering on the rising awareness of the importance of physical security, individuals and organizations have utilized the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system. With the prices remain relatively high for CCTV surveillance system installation maintenance, it also unable to detect and report the abnormalities automatically. This paper describes the design and implementation of motion activated security camera with e-mail notifications using Raspberry Pi, a circuit board computer that utilizes motion detection sensor along with a camera and relay module. In addition, the system allows flexibility for the room owner to customize, either enable or disable the motion detection sensor. The system will turn on the light automatically and capture images and videos of unauthorized movement. The system also uses e-mail notifications to automatically inform the room owner on the status of motion detection sensor and abnormalities motion. Due to the expensive price and high maintenance cost for existing surveillance monitoring system, this design is expected to overcome the problem by providing affordable system with low maintenance cost and enable the detection of abnormalities automatically which is suitable for room security monitoring.
