This paper offers a reading of La Fortune des Rougon in the light of the Commune. Zola himself, anticipating a misreading of his work confusing the massacre of the Communards with that of the Plassans rebels, revised the initial version of the text with a view to its publication in book form. These revisions will he examined here. The two versions demonstrate the distinction made between the insurgents of 1851 and those of 1871. Without this distinction there is a profound confusion in the Rougon Macquart series between the Republicans of the Empire and those who, according to Zola, give a certain public legitimacy to the attempts to restore the "ancien regime".
