Virtual environments in education

We speculate about the properties of an ideal educational environment and observe that conventional educational environments fall short of this ideal. We then review several categories of virtual environments including MOOs, digital worlds, virtual reality, collaborative buildings, and augmented reality, and give examples of some of them. We conclude that virtual environments might provide the best match with our list of properties of an ideal educational environment and that the concept should be explored more intensely.
